The problem with every software system is that it has an end-of-life. The end-of-life or EOL of Magento 1 has now been reached. This means that, according to Magento, the product has reached the end of its life cycle. This means that the product is no longer sold or promoted. Magento 2 is now also on the market and now only this is actively promoted. For the current users of Magento 1, it is very important to know that with the end-of-life the active support for the product also ends. As stated earlier, no (security) updates will then be made available anymore. And if you want your Magento website to be safe, you need these updates.
But now the big question is of course: "What do I need to know about the end-of-life of Magento 1?" And more importantly, when is the EOL? Magento has now officially announced that the end-of-life of Magento 1 is on June first, 2020. After this date, no more quality updates or security patches will be implemented for Magento Commerce 1 or Magento Open Source 1. The consequence of this is that using Magento 1 after June 2020 will make your organization very vulnerable to security breaches. How can you prevent this? Make the switch to Magento 2 as quickly as possible.
All versions of Magento 1 have an end-of-life and it is, therefore, important to switch to Magento 2 if you want to be assured of a secure website and you want to keep your current functionalities. Magento also understands that there is a lot of confusion and that it is difficult for Magento 1 users to make the switch as quickly as possible. They, therefore, say the following:
"For Magento Commerce 1, we are providing software support through June 2020. Depending on your version, software support may include both quality fixes and security patches. Please review our Magento Software Lifecycle Policy to see how your version of Magento Commerce 1 is supported."
"For Magento Open Source 1, we are providing software security patches through June 2020 to ensure those sites remain secure and compliant. Please visit our Legal Terms page and review our Magento Open Source Software Maintenance Policy to see which versions of Magento Open Source 1 continue to receive software security maintenance."
The time is running out and the time to switch to Magento 2 is now! Magento 2 is not a new version of Magento 1, it is a completely new platform. Similarly, it is not an update from Magento 1 to Magento 2, but it is an upgrade. The migration can take a lot of time. You can read how you can best prepare for this switch in the whitepaper: How to migrate from Magento 1 to Magento 2?
